Rwanda Café des Mamas Gicumbi Red Bourbon Specialty 86p
Rwanda Café des Mamas Gicumbi is a speciality coffee that stands out not only for its taste, but also for its social background. The project is linked to the Nova Coffee cooperative, which focuses on women's empowerment and sustainable farming.
Here are the main characteristics and flavor profile of the coffee:
Main characteristics
Place of origin: Rwanda, Northern Province, Gicumbi District.
Altitude: 1800 - 2000 meters (this high altitude environment results in slower ripening and more complex flavors).
Variant: Red Bourbon (one of the noblest subspecies of Arabica known for its sweet and fruity notes).
Processing method: Washed - this process gives the coffee a clean, bright and lively acidity, highlighting the characteristics of the growing area.
SCA score: Usually very high, around 87-88 points (above 80 points we are talking about specialty coffee).
Flavors and aroma
Washed Red Bourbon is characterized by a clean, elegant body and vibrant acidity. The following dominate the tasting notes:
Fruity: Primarily berries, citrus (lime, orange) and stone fruits (peach, plum).
Sweetness: Caramel, honeyed finish, sometimes with milk chocolate notes.
Character: Often there is an aroma of black tea or white flowers (jasmine), which gives the drink a kind of tea-like lightness.
Why is "Café des Mamas" special?
This batch is grown and selected specifically by Rwandan women. The project aims to support the economic independence of women coffee farmers and develop the community. Due to the volcanic soil and cooler microclimate of the Gicumbi region, the coffee beans are extremely compact, which helps preserve the intense aromas when roasted.
